What is the history of the Pepsi Company®?

The Pepsi Company® was established in the early 1890s in the state of North Carolina by a pharmacist named Caleb Bradham. He wanted to create a soft drink to compete with Coca-Cola®, which at the time was very successful. The name “Pepsi-Cola” was trademarked in 1903, which was also the time when Bradham moved the business from the drugstore to a rented warehouse. He needed to move the production facilities to accommodate for the large volume at which they were making the product. The first few years of business were very successful, but after a few logo changes and the impacts of World War I, the company went bankrupt due to high sugar prices.

Ironically, the Great Depression was a successful time for Pepsi. 12-ounce bottles were introduced and sold at the same price as Coca-Cola®'s 6-ounce bottle, which helped Pepsi out-sell Coca-Cola®. The company chose to use radio as their main method of advertising. The jingle they created referred to Coca-Cola®'s price being the same as Pepsi's, despite the difference in volume. Consumers then realized that they could get double the product with Pepsi for the same price as the competitor. Between 1936 and 1938, Pepsi's profits doubled.

In 1964, Pepsi invented the country's first diet soft drink and in 1977, the brand became the top soft drink sold in grocery stores. As of January 2021, the Pepsi Company® has acquired and now owns 16 beverage brands and 7 food brands each generating over 1 billion dollars in sales each year.

What other major brand makes up PepsiCo?

Frito-Lay® is the other major brand that makes up PepsiCo. The brand Frito became established in 1932 by a man named C.E. Doolin after he ate a bag of corn chips at a café. He bought the corn chip recipe from the previous business owner and began making and selling the corn chips. Herman W. Lay bought out the current business owner and established H.W. Lay & Company that same year. The two septate companies become successful on their own, but eventually merged to create Frito-Lay® Inc. in 1961. In 1965, Frito-Lay® merged with Pepsi-Cola to create PepsiCo, and has been acquiring more brands ever since.

Who is the owner of the Pepsi Company®?

The Pepsi brand, along with Frito-Lay® is owned by PepsiCo. As of October of 2018, Ramón Laguarta has been the company's CEO, making him the sixth CEO in company history. Laguarta is also the first Spanish CEO of a large American multinational company.
